Periodontal disease, or gum disease, as its name suggests, is the infection and inflammation of the gums and bones around the teeth. Gum disease can be completely painless, and it is estimated that the majority of adults will have some form of gum disease in their life.
There are two main forms of gum disease – gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the earlier form of gum disease, which when treated, is completely reversible. It is usually caused by bacterial infection around the gums and teeth, resulting from poor oral hygiene or improper toothbrushing technique. Signs of gingivitis include:
When treated early and in a timely manner by our dentist from Emerald Dental Care, gingivitis is completely reversible. Treatment can be in the form of removal of plaque and bacteria with an ultrasonic instrument. Once the gingivitis is under control, regular six-monthly maintenance will be adopted to prevent its reoccurrence.
If gingivitis is left unmanaged, it can progress to the more destructive form of gum disease known as periodontitis. Unlike gingivitis, damages to the gums and bones are irreversible. Signs of periodontitis include:
Treatment of periodontitis includes the removal of plaque and bacterial infection through means of deep debridement. You will be placed on a strict 3-6 monthly protocol to manage the periodontal condition. Home maintenance instructions will also be discussed and provided.
